I agree that they're superior to, well, pretty much every option listed; did they ever really get classified as a boy band though the same way New Kids did?

I think DD probably predates the notion of a "boy band" by a few years, but you could apply the label. In fact, I could give you a good argument that the prototypical boy band was The Beatles....
