(no subject)

While news of a particular death certainly never makes me happy, I can't say that I'm particularly sad to hear that Augusto Pinochet Ugarte has died.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving fellow....

Well, me neither, although I did do a happy dance when Pol Pot carked it.

I just hope those who lost 'disappeared' loved ones manage to find some resolution despite it.

In the vein of saying nothing about the dead unless it's good:

Pinochet is dead. Good.

Pinochet did quite a few evil things during his time in power, but let's not forget two things which set him apart from almost all dictators:

-- He voluntarily gave up power when he had the means to hold it by force
-- He was relatively uncorrupt (and the recent revelations that he stashed a few million abroad don't change my view on that -- considering that he was dictator of a nation of over 16 million people, that amount is closer to a 401k plan than the sort of massive corruption which often prevails in dictatorships)
