On September 11, 1973, Chilean president Salvador Allende was deposed in a coup led by General Augusto Pinochet. Margaret Thatcher later thanked him for "bringing democracy to Chile"; I suspect that she neatly ignored the question of the thousands of people killed, disappeared, and tortured.

In less depressing news, September 11, 2006 also marks 100 years of Satyagraha.
