I've finally finished entering all of my books (just stuff I own or that is jointly owned, not any of

nminusone's titles) into LibraryThing. 629 titles, which is both more and slightly less than I expected. (It makes sense to me, don't hurt your brain chewing on that one too hard.) In part this explains why people hate to help us move. Actually, it's the 1500+ CDs that really puts people off helping us move. ;) ** Still need to do some tag clean-up, but that can wait. I wouldn't be suprised if I run into a few more strays still, but that's everything I can account for right now. Now comes the hard part: figuring out where to put them all. Need more bookshelves.

How did it get to be 1:30 already? Yeesh. So much for getting to bed early so I can go pay my property tax before work tomorrow.

** I kid about this; our friends have been true saints about helping out when we move, and we loves them for it, we do.

I'm still trying to figure out how to resolve my Readerware issue - I got all the bookcases except the majority in the library done a year ago, and then we got new bookcases and I started moving books around. Did I remember which ones came from where in all the rearranging? Of course not. And the RW db is over 1100 titles with all the library cases (probably another 3000) still to go. :-/

I have my CD database set to not accept duplicates, which helps me figure out what I've entered already and what I haven't. Once I get everything scanned, I'll go back and update the number of copies for things we actually have duplicates of.

Not that this helps you figure out where you should start scanning, of course. =/

Yeah, all my Readerware DBs are set not to allow dupes, but you've assessed the fun part of my problem correctly. :-)

Librarything. Are there any other programs like that you'd recommend? Can you tell me why you picked this particular program? And finally, is it free? :)

I like this particular one because it's web-based and I seem to be more inclined to keep up with it than I was with Readerware. Readerware is an excellent software program that you can install on your local machine; you can get versions to catalog your books, your videos, or your CDs, and it works with barcode scanners (you can get one of those CueCat scanners with your software for some trivial amount, or pay more for a better quality scanner). I have all the DVDs and a small chunk of the CDs in Readerware databases, and I'll probably export my LibraryThing catalog to import it into Readerware too. LibraryThing is free for 200 books or under; if you want to enter more than that, it's $10 for a lifetime membership.

You guys should come see Harry Potter with us this weekend! Chris has a post up with the plan as we know it right now. Plus, I still have to sweettalk my way into getting that CD. ;)

I was populating an Access db with my book info a couple years ago, but I just stopped one day. It was too much trouble (at the time, I had around 1300 books; I have many, many more now).

How does Library Thing work? ISBN entry?

I'd been putting things in Readerware, but for some reason I found it easier to keep up with putting it in to LibraryThing. I may export my catalog and import it into Readerware at some point, just to have a duplicate.

You can enter books using ISBN lookup, entering the information manually, a couple of clicks on a book in someone else's catalog, or importing data from another program.
