picking up a hobby, which is markedly different from a life

I've finished an afghan for me, which was promptly claimed by my cat. No, really, he didn't even wait for me to finish, he plopped his fuzzy butt down on top of it while I was still working on it and grumped when I had to eject him to turn it. There's also now a hole in it from his enthusiastic kneading, but that's okay; the edges weren't anything resembling straight anyway. I've started in on a blanket for my niece, currently working through the third and fourth skeins of Homespun in Barrington, and I'm sure I'm going to need at least four more. The great thing about Homespun, other than the fact that it's fuzzy and warm and comfy, is that it covers a multitude of sins messed-up stitches. Then there will be one for my nephew, for which I have another big stash of yarn. And scarves, for which I have the incredibly frustrating Confetti yarn from Jo-Ann (not quite as bad as Muppet fur, but annoying nonetheless). And by the way? Jo-Ann is having a yarn sale. I will try valiantly to resist, because I have nowhere to store more yarn at the moment, seeing as how I've got ten skeins of yarn that I don't even have an intended use for yet. I should try to nip that particular packrat habit in the bud right at the start. It won't work, but I should still try.

An evening of crocheting at my house goes something like this:

*stitch* *stitch* *stitch* "No, this is not for you; you've already got two blankies, one of which is right next to you. Go sit on one of them." *stitch* *stitch* *stitch* "No, no flossing with my yarn. Cut it out." *stitch* *stitch* "Eww, damp yarn." *stitch* *stitch* "Hey! Get off my lap, this is NOT FOR YOU." *extract cat claws from blanket*

Heh, annoyingly I've picked up a hobby that is not computer-related, yet is still tough on my wrists. Go me.

"No, Kitty, this is my pot pie!"

I always thought imperfections were a sign of a homemade item of that sort. Too much symmetry/perfection = a machined look. :-)

And I had a smart-assed comment to go here, but I'm brain-farting tonight and it completely escaped me. ;-)

Funny -- I sound exactly the same when I crochet! I know I thought it was a good idea to get a kitten, but now I'm not entirely sure why. :-)

I need to have a crafting party sometime. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] kismet09 or someone could teach me how to knit. (Like I need another obsession...)

I'd come -- that'd be fun! And I'd like to do something similar as well, maybe in the spring when it's a little warmer out so we could use the sunporch.

"still tough on my wrists"

Are you using circs? I found that they helped with wrist pain, since they distribute the weight of the yarn more evenly.

Joann's is having a sale? Since one of my New Year's resolutions is to learn how to knit and/or crochet, this is perfect timing!
