Cat Valente (talk of body image issues and weight loss, in case this is a topic you wish to avoid):

There was a lot of carob, is what I’m saying, and I will go to my grave insisting that carob tastes not of chocolate or treats but a fallen world and your parents’ lies.

Is carob still a thing? I have the same horrible memories from the late 70s and early 80s: going over to the houses of friends who's parents were "eating healthy" and getting fed "desserts" and "treats" that were exactly the taste of slightly bitter ass. To this day, I would unhesitatingly support a law that defined feeding carob to a 6-year-old as child abuse.

Carob is still sort of a thing. I tried it occasionally during a decade or so I was having issues with chocolate, thinking it couldn't possibly be as bad as I remembered it being from childhood. It is nothing like chocolate.

I think carob "treats" are probably a shared formative experience of the children of hippies and health nuts in the 1970s and 1980s. Fucking carob, man. Not anything like chocolate.
