So, does the cross-posting work? (Sorry for the spam, folks.)

I had a Dreamwidth account, but a few months back I deleted it after not having used it in many, many years.

Now I have a new Dreamwidth account, same username as here. Feel free to follow me over there so I can follow you back. No promises that I'll post there any more than I have been here though. :-/

I just realized I posted here what, three or four times in all of the past year? Sheesh. That used to be a light day for me.

Mostly I'm just checking in to say I'm still alive for the most part. If you're on Facebook, that's generally where I'm hanging out. It's good for the throwaway posts and linkspam that seems to be mostly what my attention span is capable of these days. :-/

Yesterday was a rough day, what with it being the first anniversary of Chris' death. I made the mistake of scheduling a flotation tank session yesterday afternoon; it turns out that when there is limited sensory input to focus on, my brain will pretty much try to eat itself. At least I remembered not to try to wipe tears away with my salt-covered hands while in the tank. Go me.

QOTD

So now we find ourselves at a crossroads. A crossroads of hate and terror. How do we respond? How do you respond? Do we lash out with anger, hate and mistrust. Or do we, as Lincoln begged, appeal to the “better angels of our nature?”

Usually when tragedy occurs, we see our nation come together. I was saddened, yesterday to see far too many retreating to their over-worn policy corners and demagoguery. Let me be clear, there are no simple policy answers to this tragedy. Beware of anyone who tells you that they have the easy solution. It doesn’t exist. And I can assure you this — that calling people idiots, communists, fascists or bigots on Facebook is not going to change any hearts or minds. Today we need fewer Republicans and fewer Democrats. Today we need more Americans.

But just because an easy solution doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. The greatest generations in the history of the world were never innately great. They became great because of how they responded in the face of evil. Their humanity is measured by their response to hate and terror.

I think most of you who were mutual friends of ours probably know this from Facebook; if not, I am truly sorry if this is how you're finding out.

My former partner of 15 years and still very good friend Chris died unexpectedly last week. He had been ill, but this was a shock. I was worried about him since he wasn't answering chat/texts/phone calls and went over to check on him. I am still very much in shock, but I expect that will wear off soon and there will be some sort of breakdown. Even though our romantic relationship ended a while back, I still cared very much for him and am not sure how I'm going to adjust to not having him around. Please spare a thought also for his LDR girlfriend, who I am very sad to have met in these circumstances.

Some friends set up a community on Facebook where most folks seem to be these days: https://www.facebook.com/RememberingChrisCee I hope that he realized how very much he was cared about by friends near and far.

Dia & Co. (size 14+ stylist service)

For someone who only knows me from a style questionnaire I filled out and my Pinterest boards, my Dia&Co stylist Margaret totally nailed it. I love everything in my box, and it included a pair of leggings very similar to ones I was planning on buying anyway. I'm tempted to keep everything they sent, but I will probably limit it to about half. Pictures didn't turn out great, but I'll try again later with better lighting I hope.

In my box:

If you aren't familiar with the site, it's a stylist service for sizes 14+. [ETA 11/1: The FAQ says "sizes 14-32" and on Instagram they also mentioned 5X.] You fill out a style profile with your size, body type, what your personal style is like, what sort of items you'd like to receive in your box, and some budget guidelines. They charge a $20 styling fee, which is applied to your purchase of any items from your box. Anything you don't want to keep, put in the included envelope and return within five days. There's no contract, you can get boxes monthly or just whenever you want. If you want to try it out, here's a link: https://www.dia.co/r/r5e

QOTD: Go totally insane with joy

[A]s neuroscientist Head says: "Everything you do for a dog to help them age well, you should do with them."

So eat the best food you can afford. Go for a walk, even if it's raining. Take a lot of naps. Keep your teeth clean and your breath fresh, so that the people you lick will not flinch. And when someone you love walks in through the door, even if it happens five times a day, go totally insane with joy.

Hey, that's handy

It's been so long since I added a new "friend" on LJ that I hadn't noticed this before on the "add this person" settings page:

All entries can be read by default or you can personalize your feed to include/exclude posts tagged with specific words or phrases.

So, someone who doesn't want to read posts about diets (for example) can exclude any of $friend's posts using that tag from showing up on their feed? I can't think of anything offhand that I might specifically exclude, but it's good to know it's there if I want it.

Happy Cheese Weasel Day!

Who brings the cheese on April 3rd?
The Cheese Weasel!
He's not a silly bunny or a reindeer or a bird,
He's the Cheese Weasel!
He's got a cute black tail
And tiny buck teeth
He doesn't bring fish and he
Doesn't bring beef
So you'd better be good if you wanna get some cheese
From the Cheese Weasel.

I Aten't Dead

Just mostly on Facebook.

I miss this place though, even though it seems like everyone's gone elsewhere and I can often review my friends list postings for the entire day in under two pages. (Not pointing fingers in the least, since I haven't posted here in around five months myself even though I read every day.)

I resolve this year to try to write here more often rather than just linkspamming Facebook. We'll see how it goes. Although if you want the linkspam too, my FB link is in my contact info in a friends-locked sticky post at the top of my journal.

Today we went out to Front Royal for the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Center's annual festival, where in theory we could've seen the baby red pandas and some clouded leopards. Unfortunately we got there at 1:30, and the line for the panda/leopard enclosure looked like it was about 2 hours long (and they closed at 3). So instead we went to the bird house where we saw several Guam Kingfishers, a Bali Mynah, and what we were told was the only Mariana Crow left in the mainland US. (His name is Clint, he is still here because he tested positive for West Nile antibodies, he's 20, and he likes to have his head scratched.)

On the way home on 55, we tried the "turn at a random winery sign" approach, which took us to Barrel Oak in Delaplane, which is like a cross between a winery and a dog park. If you like lots of people and lots of dogs, this is the place to go. The wine is okay, some of the staff is wonderful, and it's not a bad way to kill an afternoon.

Wow, I hadn't realized it had been three months since my last post. Still mostly posting short stuff over on Facebook; user info is in my contact sticky post at the top of my journal.

Things have been happening lately, I just haven't felt up for writing about them. One bright spot is that The Boy and I adopted a dog. Her name is Keira and she's a roughly two and a half year old pitbull mix. Fifty pounds of joyful doggie love who adores her people and wants to be wedged up against them at all times. Unfortunately, she also tries to eat absolutely everything and she's currently at Southpaws animal hospital because late on the night of July 4 she got into my purse and ate two rolls of Tums (tin foil wrapper and all), chewed on pretty much everything else in there, and apparently consumed some unknown quantity of Advil that was in the bottle she chewed the top off of. She's been in hospital since Saturday afternoon, and will be there at least through tomorrow. I'm pretty worried, since she appears to be getting worse as time goes on, and my anxiety disorder isn't allowing me to stop thinking that if I had just put my purse on the counter like I usually do instead of on the chair, my dog would be okay. :-/

In a display of terrible timing, The Boy is off in Texas for work this week, so I'm home alone and get to deal with the dog crisis for the rest of the week mostly by myself.

JoCo Cruise Crazy IV

I did not go this year, but one of the cruisers has put together a "JCCC4 in 30 Minutes" video with clips from the week-long cruise.

They've already announced JCCC5, an 8 night cruise. I'm not sure I'm going yet, but the lure of Seamonkey friends and "80 degrees and sunny" in February is hard to resist.

[Edit: And if 30 minutes is too long, here's the 30 second version. ;)]

QOTD: Always kind of internally flapped

Some people say that in stressful situations I can seem unflappable, and I think that's partly because I'm always kind of internally flapped. And so ... when there's actually something real to be concerned about, it's actually less anxiety-provoking than these irrational things. It's also fairly typical ... of certain kinds of anxiety disorder sufferers, particularly people with panic disorder, [they] are exceptionally good at hiding it. They're able to convey an impression of competence, calmness and confidence, which is maybe substantially real ... but there's an internal fear. ... The gap between that and this façade where people see you as competent and effective — you're always afraid of being exposed, which is in itself anxiety producing.
