I've stopped hearing what my therapist is saying as "You should learn to be really freakin' selfish" and now hear it as "You should learn to take care of yourself first sometimes". That's progress, I think.

At the risk of sounding ironic (since I often struggle with this one myself), it is progress... even if it feels hard to let in. I also believe that there's a cultural influence around "we ought to all be considerate of one another's needs" that is stronger in those raised below the Mason-Dixon line... add to that a Catholic upbringing, and well, ((hugs)).

The "put the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting others" truth is one that is hard (SO HARD) to fully digest, but so valuable once you do.
