More on Pine Ridge and Planned Parenthood.

My take on it is that it's probably not a scam, I suspect Ms. Fire Thunder spoke hastily and it got publicized well before any sort of concrete plans to do anything of the sort could be made -- [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt's post seemed to indicate that she was surprised at how quickly word had spread. Note that they don't say they're not going to build a clinic, they just didn't currently have any plans to do so at the time the letter was written. Since I mentioned the original article, I thought I'd include this as well so that people who were interested in donating for a clinic could have a more complete view of the situation before deciding whether to write a check.

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] vvalkyri points out a piece by [livejournal.com profile] cos on Daily Kos with more information. Check the comments as well.

For those of you who haven't seen it on your f-lists yet:

The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Cecilia Fire Thunder, on South Dakota's abortion law:
β€œTo me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she said to me last week. β€œI will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

[livejournal.com profile] kathrynt has spoken to Ms. Fire Thunder and has information on where donations can be mailed if you'd like to do so.
