So, any of y'all planning to be at LISA next month? I'll be there Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; mostly commuting but I might get a local hotel room for Monday night just because it's less annoying than the Metro commute.

For my birthday, I'm taking myself to go see "Cabin in the Woods" again. Anyone want to meet up for the 7:50 showing at Tysons on Saturday? Earlier in the day (3-5) we're going to the monthly wine tasting/pairing at Foxfire Grill (http://www.foxfire-grill.com/) in case any of y'all are free and interested in that; reservations for that are required, number's on the website.

"Tron: Legacy" in IMAX 3D, Tyson's Corner, midnight. See you there?

Today's Baltimore Groupon deal: $10 for Pirate-Themed Boat Adventure from Urban Pirate (Up to $27.50 Value)

Who's up for a Bring-Your-Own-Grog cruise around Baltimore Harbor?

(Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] kellfire! ;) )

Chris and I are going to Wasabi in Tyson's Corner tomorrow at 7 for conveyor belt sushi, with dinner followed by the 9:20 PM showing of Iron Man 2. Anyone want to join us for some/all of that plan? I would suggest buying tickets ahead of time.
geekchick: (birthday)
Okay, we've pretty much settled on Cheesecake Factory in Fair Oaks tomorrow night at 7:30. If you're on Facebook, you can RSVP over there at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=113751725321838 [Edit: Or maybe not.] If not, you can leave a comment here. There is a long and honored tradition of people inviting people I've never met to my birthday dinners and it's always worked out pretty well. In fact particularly well for at least one of us. (*cough*Huey*cough*) In other words, if there's someone you want to bring along, feel free! Just please tell us for logistical purposes.

Not to worry; there will be the annual meat fountain trip in the near future. Oh, such meat consumption will there be!</Zim>

So, how many of y'all are going to be at the JoCo/Paul and Storm show tonight?
geekchick: (Default)
Tickets obtained for JoCo and Paul & Storm at the Birchmere, with only a $3.50  service charge instead of the $12 or so that Ticketbastard tacks on.  That savings was promptly blown at Cheesetique just down the street. ;)
geekchick: (cruise director)
A bunch of us are going to see "Zombieland" tonight at the Drunkhouse; doors open at 6:30, and we'll probably grab munchies there. If you want to start your year off right (with zombies and beer), come join us!

(I figure zombie-killing and beer ought to get me prepared to go back to work after two weeks off. Ugh.)

[livejournal.com profile] nminusone and I, along with a few other folks, are planning to go see the RiffTrax Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza at Tysons Corner on Thursday the 17th. Any of y'all want to join us?
geekchick: (road trip)
Okay, so I guess I've got a couple things firmed up. Will be arriving in greater Boston sometime tomorrow evening, although when will depend entirely on when I get my butt out of bed in the morning and what traffic is like. I'll be staying at the Hotel Marlowe since it's about a half mile from the conference location (heh heh, "Microsoft NERD"). I gather that the hotel is near-ish both Lechmere and Kendall/MIT T stops, so I've got that going for me. I have my car, but I plan to move it from the garage as infrequently as possible because you Boston drivers is craaaaaaaazy.

As far as social time, the best option will probably be Saturday night sometime after 8; there's conference-provided free booze happy hour after the sessions, plus allowing for time to get back to the hotel and freshen up. Any interest in dinner on Saturday? Also, suggestions for a reasonable spot? I have no idea what the options are anymore since I haven't been to Boston and really outside the Arisia hotel for a good while. I suppose there's always the venerable Mary Chung (Mmm, scallion pancake. Mmm, dun dun noodles.) but I'm fairly flexible.

Join Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot), now of RiffTrax.com, as they are reunited in HD for the first time ever on the big screen! This event will feature the world premiere of a brand new, never-before-seen short and non-stop hilarious riffing on a COLOR version of “Plan 9 from Outer Space”- a 1959 science fiction/horror film written, produced and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr.

This event will be hosted by Veronica Belmont, the Host of Tekzilla on Revision3 and Qore on the PlayStation Network, with Musical Guest Jonathan Coulton and a special segment by Rich “Lowtax” Kyanka of Something Awful.

[livejournal.com profile] nminusone and I already have tickets for the 8 PM Thursday showing at Tyson's Corner (link to Moviefone's ticketing page). Who else is going to be there?
geekchick: (cruise director)
Plotting an outing to see "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" at the AFI this Saturday. Wanna join us? Leave a comment over at Chris' post.
geekchick: (cruise director)
Chris and I are planning to go see the 11:30 showing of "Ghostbusters" at the AFI Silver tonight. There will probably be dinner beforehand someplace in the area, but the plans are not yet solidified. Wanna join us?

The HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AWESOME post of last night was because I'd just gotten home from seeing Leonard Cohen at Merriweather, along with [livejournal.com profile] nminusone, [livejournal.com profile] chadu, and [info]mrsexandpancakes. The man is 74 years old, and put on a 3.5 hour show with one roughly-15 minute break and seemed to love every minute of it; I am half his age and exhausted thinking about it, and he was skipping (literally) on and off stage between songs. The one less-than-perfect thing about the evening (other than the fact that he didn't do "Sisters of Mercy") was the fact that it started raining about 5 minutes before he hit the stage and kept raining pretty close to constantly until right around the time the show ended at 11; this was bad because we had lawn seats and no chairs, just tarps. I sent a text to twitter at the first break, which was essentially "I'm soaked to the bone and cold, and I don't care because this is fan-freakin'-tastic". Luckily I had [livejournal.com profile] chadu, prince among men, to kindly lend me his hoodie and save my dumb ass from freezing to death after I left mine at home and was stuck in a short-sleeved sweater. Admittedly, after an hour or so the large upcharge for tiny folding chairs in the pavilion started looking like it would've been worthwhile; on the other hand, there's only so wet you can really get and after that it can't get any worse. Until the cold wind picks up, but we shall not speak of that.

I already knew it was hard to hear over the sound of how awesome Leonard Cohen is, so the real discovery of the evening for me was Javier Mas. (Huey, I think the instrument we were wondering about is a laúd.)

If you have the chance to catch any of the remaining tour, do it. Trust me, it's totally worth it.

The setlist )

Okay, so the other less-than-perfect part of the evening was the not getting home until 12:45 part. We got out of the parking lot much faster than expected, and then made the unfortunate choice of taking 95 instead of Colesville; someone had flipped a car on 95 a few miles north of the Beltway and 3 of 4 lanes were closed. It's surprising how much traffic there is through there after midnight on a Monday night.

If you were planning on joining us for the Star Trek 7:15 show on Sunday at Udvar-Hazy and haven't bought tickets yet, I've been told by someone in that same boat that you are now out of luck and the show is sold out. =(

If you are planning on going, wanna give me a ping here or at my geekchick@lj email address so we can coordinate timing?

[EDIT: If you're free at 1 PM today, on Twitter, and can get to the Cinema De Lux in Fairfax Corner, the ThinkGeek folks are going to the movie and have a free spare ticket: http://twitter.com/thinkgeek/status/1738204934]
geekchick: (rain)
See icon. Sheesh. Wish I'd thought to take the ark out for dinner tonight instead of the Mazda. The blinding rain and flooded road made for a spectacular end to an otherwise very entertaining evening in which I did not get a house but I did get dinner and some drinks. Not as spectacular as it could've been if I'd been paying less attention, granted, but still more excitement than I wanted to have on the drive home.

Now I just have to hope it dries out over the weekend a bit, othewise the lawn tickets at Merriweather for Leonard Cohen are going to be a whole lot of fun.
geekchick: (cruise director)
No "Star Trek" in IMAX at Air & Space on Saturday night; the last available show sold out as I was clicking on the "buy tickets" link.

New plan: Sunday, 7:15 PM. Tickets available online here. Meet up at Udvar-Hazy in time to pick up tickets at will-call and not be sitting in the front row, which would suuuuuuuuuck. Protip: parking is $15 unless you show up after 4 PM.

[Edit:] Wil Wheaton's opinion of the movie. (Review with more words in his blog.)
geekchick: (geekery)
Do I wait and see Star Trek at the 9:45 PM show Saturday at the IMAX theater at Udvar-Hazy (assuming I snag tickets before it sells out), or do I go to Tyson's on Friday night? This is an IMPORTANT DECISION, people.
geekchick: (birthday)
(Boy, does that sounds like it could be NSFW.)

Okay, since it was mostly a wash between one weekend and t'other, I've been lame enough not to give enough advance notice, and [livejournal.com profile] brian1789 will be in town that weekend, let's go with next Saturday, April 25, for the annual Natal Celebration at the Carousel of Meat.

Deets: Malibu Grill Steak House in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), 7:00 if I can get a reservation for that slot, followed by postprandial repairing to the [livejournal.com profile] geekchick/[livejournal.com profile] nminusone estate just down the road for cake or death if desired. Try to let me know if you're planning on showing up by COB(-ish) on Thursday so I can make a reservation, por favor. Vegetarians, the place does have a salad bar with varying degrees of friendliness, but I can't find any evidence yet that you could be charged just for that if you didn't want to partake in the unending stream of grilled meats.
