It's been so long since I added a new "friend" on LJ that I hadn't noticed this before on the "add this person" settings page:

All entries can be read by default or you can personalize your feed to include/exclude posts tagged with specific words or phrases.

So, someone who doesn't want to read posts about diets (for example) can exclude any of $friend's posts using that tag from showing up on their feed? I can't think of anything offhand that I might specifically exclude, but it's good to know it's there if I want it.

That is a very nice feature.

Yep. I never think to actually do so, though

Of course, this works only if people consistently use the same tags for the posts on subjects I don't want to see. I'm not sure the Venn diagram of "people who consistently use tags" and "people who often write about things I don't want to see" has a large enough intersection for this to be worth the bother for me.

An obvious use case: I Just added [personal profile] grrm so that his Hugo-related entries will be easily indexed on my friends list, but I might not want to be spoiled on his new work, and he helpfully tags entries with the book he's talking about. (In practice, I don't care.)
